The advice I got was that "in the period" a woman would not allow such a blatant sexual gesture from a man; that there was no gradation of sexual activity the way there is now (the idea that "kisses are trivial, you can have oral sex and still be a virgin, etc.") and that the equivalent "risque" gesture would have been more like the man taking the woman's hand and pressing it to his chest.

Risque? Since when did thaetre shy away from the risque? Especially Moliere?!
